Cetaceans are a group of aquatic mammals which include all the varieties of whales and dolphins. There are over 80 recognized species of cetaceansincluding both freshwater and saltwater natives. While they are all considered whales, there are some important differences between the two types.
The classification of whales and dolphins order Cetacea should be completely revised, say researchers from the US and Belgium who have analysed the DNA of these animals. According to the new analysis, the sperm whale and the pygmy sperm whale, both of which have teeth, are more closely related to baleen whales than other toothed whales. Ideally, the classification of a group of animals should reflect how the animals evolved.

Sperm whales are named after the spermaceti oil wax that they produce in the spermaceti organ located in their head. It is because of this oil that man hunted the sperm whales, going after the prized spermaceti oil that was used to make smokeless candles during the 19 th century. Sperm whales are one of the deepest diving whales, they usually dive hundreds of meters to find their food but have been recorded at depths of over m which is phenomenal. Sperm whales eat prey found on or near the ocean bottom, squid is their main diet but they also eat sharks and various bony fish.
It is the only living member of the genus Physeter and one of three extant species in the sperm whale familyalong with the pygmy sperm whale and dwarf sperm whale of the genus Kogia. The sperm whale is a pelagic mammal with a worldwide range, and will migrate seasonally for feeding and breeding. The females cooperate to protect and nurse their young.

At this time in the mid-Oligocene epoch, the region was an island archipelago lapped by the shallow waters of highly productive seas.
Sperm whales Physeter catodonor cachalots, are the largest of the toothed whaleswith males up to 19 meters 62 feet long—more than five times the length of a large elephant —and females up to 12 meters 39 feet in length. They are easily recognized by their enormous square head and narrow lower jaw. As far as we can tell, Moby Dick was the only sperm whale that delivered a unique brand of karmic justice to one-legged sea captains bent on vengeance.
